The MF 165 is one of the few tractors of its era that still makes sense as a working machine rather than a project. Parts are everywhere, the Perkins four-cylinder is straightforward to work on, and 60 hp with a 540 PTO covers a topper, a mixer, a small baler or a loader on a smallholding.
This is a round-axle unit supplied in Field Ready standard. Two-wheel drive, six-speed transmission, manual steering, dry brakes and CAT 1 or 2 three-point linkage. A towing drawbar is fitted.
What Field Ready means
The tractor goes through the workshop, where the front axle, engine, steering, clutch, transmission, hydraulic lift, brakes, PTO and electrical system are all checked and repaired or replaced as needed. It then gets three tests before it leaves.
- Dyno test on engine and PTO performance and power
- Hydraulic lift test on the pump and three-point linkage
- Road test on transmission, clutch, front axle, steering, brakes and gears
Field Ready is a working standard, not a restoration. Expect a tractor in good order that you can put straight to work on the farm, not a show finish.
Upgrades
Manual steering can be converted to power steering, and the drawbar to an automatic pick-up hitch. Front weights and sun canopies are available as optional extras. The power steering is worth thinking about if the tractor is going to live on loader work, because manual steering on a 165 with a loaded bucket up front is honest exercise.
