Four stalls, gooseneck hitch, and the trim level Trails West puts at the top of its range. The Sierra ships standard with equipment other builders charge extra for: aluminum wheels, anodized aluminum exterior extrusion, a stainless steel front, and a horse compartment that is fully lined and insulated. This 2020 suits people who move four head on a regular schedule and are done with stripped-out trailers.
Steel frame, aluminum skin
Trails West builds the Sierra on a steel frame with aluminum skin instead of going all-aluminum, and that is a deliberate middle ground. The frame carries load the way steel does and can be welded by any competent shop. The skin does not corrode. The stainless front panel takes the stone chips that would otherwise pit the nose. Lining and insulation in the horse compartment cut the interior temperature swing and knock down road noise for animals standing in a metal box for six hours.
Stalls
Wood floors, fully matted inside and out. Padded aluminum dividers running slam latches. Drop-down feed doors on the head side and sliding bus windows on the tail side, so feeding and ventilating happen from opposite sides of the trailer. One two-way pop-up vent per horse. Tie rings inside and out at every stall. Double rear doors with windows, which makes loading the back pair a good deal less awkward than a single door.
Tack and dressing room
Side tack carries a 4-tier swing-out saddle rack, blanket bar, bridle hooks and a water tank. The front dressing room comes with the Comfort Package: boot box, Fantastic Fan, carpet, window shades and steps up to the bed area. The angle wall is carpeted full height, so tack hangs without scarring it.
Dimensions are 7 ft tall and 7 ft 1 in wide. A loaded four-horse gooseneck is a serious tow. Confirm your bed hitch and your truck’s rear axle rating before you buy rather than after. Even on a 2020 in this condition, we would want you to look under the mats at the wood floor, then at the mats, tires and brakes.
