The X940 is the diesel at the top of Deere’s garden tractor line, and it is a different animal from the gas X500s underneath it. Cast iron front axle. Wet disc brakes. MIG robot-welded frame. A hydraulic front linkage with two functions and four outlets, which is what lets you hang a blade or a broom on the front and actually use this thing in winter.
Engine and drive
The 3TNM74F is a three-cylinder water-cooled diesel, 993 cc, rated 24.5 hp (18 kW) at 3,400 rpm. Cast iron cylinder liners, overhead valves, pressure lubrication with a replaceable filter, and a two-piece dry air cleaner with a clogging indicator. It sits on vibration-damping rubber mounts. Fuel tank holds 20 liters (5.3 gal).
Transmission is the hydrostatic K90 with Twin Touch pedal control, rear-wheel drive with traction control, and an internal hydraulic PTO clutch with modulated engagement. Forward speed is 0 to 14 km/h, reverse 0 to 10 km/h.
Deck and steering
This one carries the 137 cm (54 in) side discharge deck with Mulch Control. The 54 HC deck is stamped from 3.8 mm steel with rolled edges and three belt-driven spindles. Cutting height adjusts from 25 to 133 mm in 6.4 mm steps, from the seat. There is a cleaning port built into the deck housing.
Power steering, a 36 cm wheel, six-position tilt column and a 63.5 cm turning radius. Turf tires are 18×8.50-8 front and 26×12-12 rear. Foldable ROPS with a belt.
Two things to know
No hour meter reading came with this listing. Ask us and we will photograph it. Second, this is a European-specification machine, so the deck is a 137 cm and the panel reads in km/h. Deck sizes are the same castings Deere sells here as 48, 54 and 60 in, and parts cross over, but if metric badging bothers you, say so now rather than after it arrives.
