This is the Behnke tilt deckover for people towing with a one-ton rather than a road tractor. 24,000 lb GVWR, 102 in wide, 28 ft overall, split into 20 ft of gravity tilt and 8 ft of stationary deck. Empty weight is 7,250 lb, which leaves 16,750 lb of payload on paper.
The torsion axle upgrade
This unit was ordered with the 12,000 lb Dexter torsion axles instead of the standard springs. That brings larger 5 in brakes and a heavier axle tube, and it rides noticeably better on rough ground. Worth knowing the flip side: torsion axles do not equalize load between axles the way a spring and equalizer setup does. Cross a deep approach at an angle with a heavy machine on the deck and one axle carries more than its share for a moment. In normal road and yard use nobody notices. On badly rutted ground, springs are the more forgiving design.
Tires and frame
235/75R-17.5 18-ply super singles rated 6,005 lb each on 17.5 in eight-hole wheels. Fewer tires to buy than duals and easier to inspect, at the cost of no second wheel on that side if one lets go. Frame is 10 in channel with 5 x 3 x 1/4 in angle side rails. Unloaded deck height is 35 in.
Tilt and setup
Dual 14 in cushioned cylinders with a hydraulic flow valve and dampening on ATF, plus a pipe latch to lock the deck for transport. Traction bars are welded onto the fenders so you have footing over the axles.
The jacks were upgraded too: dual 2-speed 25K semi-style Jost jacks in place of the single 12,000 lb spring-loaded jack that comes standard. If you drop and hook this trailer more than once a week you will feel the difference immediately.
Deck is 2 x 8 No. 1 treated pine with steel over-wheel plating. Coupler is an adjustable 2-5/16 in or pintle. Finish is bead blasted, acid washed, zinc-rich primed and powder coated, in Charger Grey here.
