Here is the reasoning. Gross weight is fixed. Spread it over a longer bed with shallower sides and you get a trailer that fills to the top with dense material at about the same moment it reaches its weight limit. Gravel, sand, millings, wet spoil, broken concrete. Nothing is wasted. Load light bulky material like brush or mulch and you will run out of box long before you run out of rating, which is where the tall-sided 14-foot version earns its money instead.
