The 424 is Caterpillar’s center-pivot backhoe loader. It is the machine municipalities and utility crews buy when the work is a mix of digging, loading and driving between jobs, and when a dedicated excavator plus a wheel loader would be two machines too many. Center-pivot means the backhoe boom swings on a central post rather than sliding on a rail, which keeps the rear end simpler and cheaper to look after over a long life.
