You buy a backhoe when you cannot justify a separate excavator and a separate loader. This JCB 3DX does both ends: a 1.1 cubic meter loader bucket up front, a 0.26 cubic meter backhoe bucket on the back, and 7,200 kg of operating weight keeping it planted while the dipper pulls.
Power is the JCB 430 engine, 37 kW (49 hp) at 2,050 rpm, 270 Nm of torque. That is modest next to a North American production backhoe, and it should be read that way. This machine suits utility trenching, footings, drainage runs and yard work. Pump flow is 114 lpm, and flow is what actually sets your cycle speed once you are in the trench.
Reach and dig
Maximum dig depth is 4,770 mm, a little over 15 ft 6 in. Reach at ground level to the swing center is 5,400 mm, and out to 6,720 mm measured from the rear wheel center. The bucket rotates through 185 degrees and dipper tear-out is 3,257 kgf. On the loader end, dump height is 2,740 mm and maximum lift is 1,490 kg.

Braking is the JCB Q setup: hydraulically actuated, dual line, self-adjusting, oil-immersed multi-disc on the rear axle. Sealed from dirt and water, so they hold up better than exposed shoes on a wet site. The parking brake is hand operated on the rear axle input disc. The rear axle carries the JCB Max-Trac torque proportioning differential; the front steer axle is centrally pivoted with 16 degrees of oscillation.
Turning circle outside the bucket is listed at 11,600 mm, and 8,640 mm not braked. Freight is a flat $550 to the lower 48. Thirty days from delivery to return it.
