Gasoline, air cooled, Briggs engine. On a machine this size that is a feature rather than a compromise. No glow plugs, no fuel treatment in winter, no emissions system to clog, and you can fill it from the same can as your mower. Diesel makes sense once a machine is heavy enough to work all day; below that it is mostly extra cost and extra maintenance.
The H12 comes with a manual thumb already fitted. That is worth more on a small excavator than almost anything else you could add. Without a thumb you can only scoop. With one you can pick up brush, roots, rock, broken concrete and fence posts, which is most of what a small machine actually gets asked to do around a property.

Rubber tracks at 7 in. wide keep it light on a lawn and let you drive over a paved driveway without leaving marks. The 3 ft backfill blade pushes spoil back into a trench and stabilises the machine when you are digging hard.
The 16 in. tooth bucket is a good general width for this class. Wide enough to move dirt, narrow enough to trench a water line without excavating half the yard.
