Provenance matters more on trailers than most buyers expect. This 2013 Sportsman had one owner, saw little use, and lived under cover. You can see it in the parts that normally give a used trailer away, because seals, tires, and finish age from sunlight and standing weather far faster than they age from miles.
Sundowner’s Sportsman line sits at the practical end of the range. Three-horse slant load, 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, 7.5 feet tall inside. That extra height is not a rounding error. Most three-horse trailers give you seven feet or a little over, and warmbloods, tall thoroughbreds, and anything with a high head carriage travel better with the extra six inches. Measure your horse at the poll before you decide it does not matter.
| Configuration | 3 horse slant load |
|---|---|
| Length | 22.00 ft |
| Width | 7.50 ft |
| Interior height | 7.50 ft |
| Axles | 2 |
| Empty weight | 5,305 lbs |
| GVW | 11,684 lbs |
| Tack room | Extra large |
| Jack | Electric |
| Also fitted | Onboard water tank, boot box |
| History | One owner, seldom used, stored under cover |
The equipment list is short and useful. An electric jack, which you appreciate every single time you hitch alone. An onboard water tank, so you are not hunting a spigot at an unfamiliar fairground. A boot box. And a tack room that is oversized rather than merely adequate, which is the right size for a three-horse operation that shows.
Read the weights carefully. Empty is 5,305 lbs against a GVW of 11,684 lbs, so there is roughly 6,300 lbs of payload riding on two axles. Generous for three horses. But 11,684 lbs loaded is a serious tow, and a half-ton is not the truck for this trailer no matter what the brochure claims about maximum capacity. Confirm your rear axle and hitch rating at the loaded number.
Even on a well-kept unit, check the floor, read the tire date codes, and test the brakes on the way out of the lot. Twelve-year-old tires with full tread are still twelve-year-old tires. Dimensions and weights above are as listed and approximate.
